Tickle and blow

Something you may not have known about my hubby Dirk Caber is that he’s an accomplished classical musician and composer; in addition to writing music, he’s a professional singer and tuba player. He’s performed at Carnegie Hall a whopping 40 times! He also plays piano — poorly, as he would say. (Most porn actors have day jobs; his is in music, and mine is IT-related.) Unfortunately we don’t have ready access to a piano, so he’s a little out of practice, and this parlor grand at his parents’ house is woefully out of tune. Still, on Thanksgiving night he sat down and played this piece from memory having not done so in almost two years. I love the way tickles the keys. Pretty awesome!

With all the rubbing we do, some of his musical background must have rubbed off on me, because he convinced me to pick up my baritone horn after it collected 20 years of dust in my mom’s basement. And, believe it or not, last January we participated in President Barack Obama’s inaugural parade with the Lesbian and Gay Band Association! What an incredible experience. We were 280-members strong, the second largest contingent in the parade after the US Navy band. We weren’t supposed to look over at the presidential grandstand, but I did anyway; I got a peek of the President smiling and waving, and the Veep and Dr. Biden, his wife, grooving to our rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Edge of Glory.” (I know, I know… but it actually really fun to play!)

Here’s a couple of screen captures of Dirk and me from the C-SPAN feed of the parade; I was in the second row so I lucked out and got a close-up, but Dirk was way in the back with the other sousaphones so I only have one really-far-away picture of him (the arrow’s pointing to him).

We’re looking into getting a piano; we just have to find room for it, or find a nice electronic one. Once we do, though, I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more from my amazing Dirkuoso.

This is absolutely fabulous. I would love to hear Dirk sing in that fabulous basso profundo voice of his. A musician myself, I play piano, sing, play trumpet and French horn. I don’t do any of it professionally but I do share my time and talent with two local school systems and a local community theatre group.

If you are looking for a piano, I have three. I would gladly donate one to you boys. They are all located in Vermont but it really isn’t that far away. Even if you wanted to wait until Spring when it is warmer. That would give you time to clear space for one. Let me know!! I mean it.

Wow, what a wonderful offer! So very, very generous of you! I’ll talk it over with Dirk. The parlor grand he’s playing in the video actually belongs to him, but he’s keeping it at his parents’ house because we simply don’t have the room for it (and might not even be able to get it into our house because we have a weird layout). Something a bit smaller, like a baby grand, might actually be more manageable.

And yeah, isn’t he amazing? He’s a man of so many talents, and he keeps surprising me with more. He’s a walking encyclopedia of all sorts of knowledge with instant recall of almost everything, he’s mechanically gifted, has incredible spatial intelligence (you should see him work a Rubik’s Cube!)… the man is amazing. And he has the soul of an artist and a heart of pure gold. And he’s one of the hottest porn stars in the industry. I’m such a lucky, lucky man. (Can you tell I worship him? LOL) Pretty much the only things I have him beat on are pop culture and computers. <grin>

I just talked to Dirk. He’d like to know what size the piano is… I think he’s trying to figure out if it’ll fit. The problem is that both stairways have a weird curve in them… we might have to hire a crane.

So does Dirk work as a musician in a school setting or per gig kind of thing? What’s the percent ratio of doing porn vs music? I’m always fascinated with porn stars’ day jobs and the porn.

Dirk is a freelance tubist, singer, composer, and music editor/arranger. He’s also has several stints as an orchestra librarian. He spent 12 years in NYC before moving on to Chicago and now Boston. Music is the primary vocation, and porn is both a fun sideline and a way to earn a little extra spending money. He also sees porn as a way to make his life more well-rounded; he mixes the high culture of classical music with the spicier world of adult film. It makes for a great counterbalance, wouldn’t you say? 😉

The music. I’ve never seen him happier or more excited than when he’s talking about music. He has the soul and the passion of an artist. It’s yet one more reason why I love him.

My background too. I still have my old Time series of classical music records from the 60s and 70’s. It’s always my fall back when I am stressed out!
